Inquest

Swan - an inquest into the death of a man believed to be William Swan returned a verdict of "that we are of the opinion that the body of the deceased, viewed by the jury, is that of William Swan, and that he came by his death on the morning of the 4th of January, by the burning of a raupo whare, but how the fire originated there is no evidence to show

Jensen - at Tahaenui an inquest into the death of Julius Jensen, a Scandinavian boy aged 17 years, returned a verdict of "accidentally drowned"
witnesses:Charles Lloyd and others who were un-named

Accident

Golding - At West Clive,  Walter Golding, through the incautious use of a knife, received a severe wound to the throat. Dr De Lisle attended the man and he was taken to Napier Hospital

Fraser - Mr John Fraser had his hand severly mangled at the Spit while discharging cargo from the ship Renfrewshire, he was taken to the doctor and the proper remedies adopted.

Hansen - At the port a man named Hansen was returning from a wedding in a punt but got carried out to sea by the strong current. a rescue boat was unable to find him. He leaves a wife and one child.

Inquests

Zimon - at Wainui, an inquest into the death of Soloman Zimon, a pedler, returned a verdict of "accidental drowning.
witnesses (also all jurors.. they only viewed the body as far as I can tell): Alfred Avery, Stephen Franklin, Arthur Herbert, Alexander Louis Francis Cittadini, James Robinson (constable).

Read - At Gisbourne an inquest into the death of Captain Read returned a verdict of "died from the visitation from God" it was determined without a post mortem, that the deceased died from fatty degeneration of the heart. all business suspended in the town.

Fatal Accident

Copplestone - at Little Bush, Papakura, a single man named William Copplestone was killed after falling from a threshing machine and then being crushed under it. death was immediate. ( a later inquest returned a verdict of "accidental death"

Kent - At Tahoraite, an inquest in to the death of Samuel Kemp, a bushman, returned a verdict of "shot himself with a rifle while in a state of temporary insanity"

Accident

Gaisford - at Waipukurau Mr. Gaisford had a horse roll over him and stand on his ear, he was unconscious for a while and delerious on waking but progressing well now.

O'Meara - in Auckland a girl named O'Meara was burned through another child throwing a lighted match at her, it is feared her injuries are fatal.

Illness

Carmichael - Onion - Dysentry is very prevalent in Waipawa, Mr. Onion and Mr. Carmichael both lost a child to it, as well as one other child who died.
